PAIN AND CRIME ARE NOT THAT BAD

BODILY PAIN

Let us first talk about bodily pain. Pain should not be confused with emotional pain. Body pain is generally caused by sickness and sickness is not in our control. Pain is age related too and that too is not in our control. Pain can be caused by accidents and that too is not in our control. The only way we can reduce it by ourselves is by living with it and praying God for mercy. Since it is not in our control, society has arranged for people who can control it.

Now we remember God only when we are in pain or some trouble. This proves without doubt that pain is not that bad. 

There is however more practical way of looking at it. Pain is the bread giver to many. When in pain we go to a doctor, get some lab tests done as suggested by him, buy some medicines as prescribed by him and get relief. Thus our pain has given livelihood to doctors, nurses, hospital staff, medicines manufacturers and sellers and millions of supporting people. Pain is not that bad, above all. How can it be when millions of people live on and by it?

CRIME.

Crime has lived with us since the very beginning. It is difficult to define crime or say what constitutes crime but in general it is something done against the law like beating some one, theft, rape, murders, extortion, blackmailing and so on and so forth. Again people who commit crimes are considered bad people by those on whom such crimes are committed. Crime is like dust on our sleeves which needs to be dusted out regularly because it cannot be eliminated altogether. 

Crime again is not in our control because the criminals are not in our control and we cannot control people becoming bad. In spite of our best educational efforts we could not stop people becoming bad. We gave the best ‘sanskars’ to our kids but that did not stop some of them going bad ways. Since we cannot control the criminals the thereby the crimes the society has arranged for some who are assigned this job by law. Now we first make a law that rape is a crime and provide for punishment for it and then we make another set of procedures to prove that rape was committed or not committed.

This gave birth first to the law makers called differently legislators (some of them have serious criminal cases against them but that is another issue). Then we appointed the enforcers called police (here again we will not talk about the very morality of a policeman). Then came the lawyers both prosecutors and defenders. Then the jails and jail staff.

Now we come to the mute point of how crime has given employment to lakhs of people. Not only the criminals, the legislators, police, lawyers and many other supporting people survive and make their living on crimes.

Crime therefore is not bad at all. 

You may call me names but that is the price every truthful man has to pay.

Perumal Murugan, the Tamil writer was recently interviewed by Barkha Dutt of NDTV. I had never heard of him as I have never heard of many other famous writers. He was hounded by some Hundutwa forces for his novel Madhurobhagan which was translated into English as One Part Woman. He stopped writing for some years and now has penned some poems.

During the course of the interview he indicated that there is one censor sitting inside him that cautions him to select his words and opinion. He is a great writer and thinker. But he too had to keep his mouth shut for a good time and now he is cautious what to write or say and what not.

  

Does not it sound familiar?  Don’t we have this censor within us that forces us not to say something. Can we name it fear or decency or something else? 

The question is here in different words. How often you stopped sort of saying something unpleasant but stopped at the nick of hour because the censor inside stopped you? How often you wanted to cry loudly but the censor inside stopped you? How often you wanted to sing at the top of your voice in a running train or bus or plane but the censor stopped you? How often you wanted to say ‘go to hell’ but the censor stopped you? These are and many other pointers lead to find out who this censor is. 

Naming it ‘fear’ seems to be most appropriate. We keep our mouth shut for fear of law or for fear of people more powerful than us like the Government or the police or some high ranking official or some moneyed man who can teach us a lesson for our stupidity. The latest debate about nationality is recent case.  

Naming it ‘decency’ also looks fine. We keep our mouth shut for not to annoy some one dear to us or simply for the sake of decency in our behavior. There is no point annoying or hurting the feelings of others so we keep silent or indifferent even though we feel like saying a spade a spade.

ALTRUISM

Altruism Altruism - feeling compassion for others This subject suggested  is complex one. Why would one spend his hard earned money and  precious time with children of lesser Gods- the poor helpless kids? Our actions have motives. We want good education because it will provide a good job which in turn  help in finding a good spouse and that will lead to good life. Each of our action leads us to something of which we crave. Similarly we are good to people because we think it will fetch us some praise or recognition from others or it will give us some pleasure. Our altruism, our compassion, sympathy, our feelings are guided by some ulterior motive.            Is it possible to separate motives from actions? This will mean being good for the sake being good or  doing right because it is right to do right things.            Gita spouses the maxim of doing your duty without attachment to results. It is your duty to do good  and right things. It is your dharma.            Gita as I see it does not say not to enjoy the positive results of your actions. Good education leads to good job to good spouse to good life , so enjoy .             In other words if altruism gives you praise and recognition , devour it. It is fine as long as you did not desire for it. If moral behavior is founded on the premise that it is the right thing to do and not because it will fetch some praise and recognition or it will be counted by Chitragupta while allotting a seat in the            heaven, then it is all fine. But if your altruism is guided by some selfish motive then you are not doing it  for any moralistic reason. It applies to being honest , truthful, upright and God fearing. In conclusion I think being altruistic is good in anywhichway because it  gives much needed solace to  the recipient.

WHY WE GET ANGRY

The subject has been dealt in detail by our saints and sages, philosophers, intellectuals and of course commoners. I being a common man will also deal with it in a very common way.

The root cause of anger is expectations from others and self. We get angry if something does not go as per our expectation.  It may be someone else or our own self. 

That someone else may be our own parents, spouse, children, relatives, friends or even strangers. We always expect something from others and if they fail to behave the way we want them to we get angry. I will not go into details because that will turn this article into a book. 

We get angry with self because we do no measure up to our own expectations. We want to control our senses but cannot and hence get angry. We want to control our situation but cannot and hence get angry. We want to be successful in whatever we do but cannot and hence get angry. In short whatever we want to change but cannot hence get angry.

HOW CAN WE AVOID BEING ANGRY

It is obvious that if we can control the root causes of anger, we can control anger. It seems so simple but it is not because the very assumption that we can control the root causes of anger is self defeating. Anger is a natural reaction and very much human. Those who claim to have control over their anger are not speaking the truth.

There is no need to control anger. Being angry is not a crime. Staying angry is. In anger one speaks his/her heart out. The truth comes out. That truth may not be everybody’s truth but at least it is his truth. Anger reveals a man inside out. Say it and be done with. If you do not do it you will stay angry and that is dangerous because it does no harm to others but a lot of harm to you. It is like acid that eats the vessels it is stored in.

This poor soul backed out at the last moment. Not like Queen style. Those who have seen this movie will understand what I mean. This guy backed out just a day before of his wedding. His close friend talks to him and is surprised to find that the would be groom finds everything pointless-the wedding-then children- then responsibilities-then children taking to their wings-and finally death.What is the point? 

He is not alone. The inevitability of death at the end, every thing that we have done or will do seem to be pointless. It may be about education, job, marriage, children, property, relationships and so on. What is the point? 

High end education did help in having a good paying job but beyond that it was pointless.It did not make us good human beings. It did not help us understand life and worse it did not help us understand death. All it did was make us selfish, materialistic and self centered. It did not help us prepare us for the end and enjoy the departure. It did nothing to eradicate the fear of death. What was the point? Even without any formal education  we would have met the same end. What is the point?

Marriage provoked passion, passion brought children and both brought responsibilities. Both evoked the need for property, more property, selfishness and more selfishness, attachments and more attachments but did help stop the ultimate. In fact all put together increased the fear of death and desire to live more, a few days more. What was the point? 

Thousands of saffron clad sadhus all over the religious places in the country seem to be advocating the point. None of them seem to be in search of truth. Most of them are there because they could not fit any where else. They evaded the ups and downs of life for fear of failure. They took the easy way out, or that is what they thought. They did not realize that life, any life demands some commitment. Some of them returned to the normal life but almost none of them were happy with the life they were living. This is like being 'na ghar ke na ghat ke'. What is the point?

The point is humans are made to live in the company of other fellow humans and that is what satisfies them. Marriage is one such option where the spouse is a partner in good and bad, success and failure. They are supportive of each other like a co-pilot. They are two wheels of the family vehicle. Children compliment and supplement this process.Friends and relatives are also needed because without them the journey will be incomplete. If nothing else they help on last journey.

At the risk of being called anti national for posting such thoughts on the eve of our Independence Day, I am not in a position to resist it mainly because face book is flooded with posts hailing our jawans. It seems as if the surge of love for the jawans has suddenly erupted in view of their sacrifice in difficult situations in controlling the unrest in the valley.

Their primary job is to protect the borders by driving away the intruders from the borders or from life itself. They are trained to do it. The alternative is to get killed. Every person who joins the force is aware of the fact that his life will be at risk. He joins it because either he wants to make a career in the forces and earn a decent package in terms of monetary benefits. I am not sure how many of them do it for the love of the country. Once they join the forces they are trained to believe that they are performing their duty for the love of the country. They are trained to hit back with full force without mercy or else the enemy will kill them and the civilians they are supposed to protect.

It was a simple option for the mercenaries during the 100 years of war in Europe. They joined the forces for money and that was that.Some of them did not belong to the country they were fighting for. Take the case of Gorkhas. They were in British and later on in Indian army. 

The number of people lining up for recruitment in the army, police and other para military forces and the stories of corruption prevailing in the recruitment process further strengthens the point that it is an career option/family tradition for some and a way of earning livelihood for others. It is their training that makes them faithful to their job and country. Their rigorous practice of this motto makes them disciplined solders.

It is sad that our Jawans have to open fire on their own brothers and sisters within the boundaries of the country. Here they are being asked to do exactly the opposite. The civilians under any guise hit them with stones, guns and even rocket launchers. They are told to keep cool and act with restraint. This is not what the army jawans were trained for. It is easy to preach for restraint but difficult to practice it in the face of provocation as our jawans and other security forces are facing in various part of the country. They may be misguided elements in the valley or deep forest of naxals hit areas or tribal in the North east.

   

             

TERRORISTS, HOSTAGES AND POLITICIANS

Terrorists, Hostages and Politicians.

All over the world terrorists take innocent people as hostages but I have not heard or read of any political leader being taken as hostage, have you?

One reason could be that political leaders are under layers and layers of armed security that is impossible to penetrate. 

I was watching this Hollywood movie "The Taking of Pelham 123" . The terrorist, for want of any other name, I will call him terrorist, is holding the motorman and some 20 passengers women and children included in a coach of sub way train named Pelham that starts at 1.23 (name of the movie) in New York asking for 10 million dollars in return. During negotiations the city mayor enters the room and the terrorists mocks him for his expansive suit and proposes he will be prepared to release the hostages in exchange of the mayor as hostage till his demand of 10 million dollars is met. 

It is obliviously refused. Politicians are precious and cannot be put to such risk.

I wonder under similar situation will any of our own leader volunteer? I doubt very much. Considering past experience when dreaded terrorists were freed in exchange of kins of political leadership in Kashmir.

Again Kashmir is burning and political leaders are hiding in their safe abodes. Some are on holidays. The Deputy CM from BJP has left the town at a time when he was needed the most.

It will be interesting if some terrorist asks for a political leader as a collateral. The power that be will promptly agree to accept their demands. To hell with the interest of the nation.
